Based on T.S. Elliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Cats is one of the most beloved and longest-running musicals on Broadway and in the West-End.

Adapted for film and directed by Tom Hooper, the new Cats movie features debut ‘digital fur technology’ which sees the cast performing in skin tight colourful suits, with the CGI fur added post-production.

This came as a surprise to Rebel Wilson, who plays Jennyanydots,  she confessed to Playbill, ‘I thought when I was cast, it was going to be three to four hours of prosthetics’. Wilson further revealed ‘They did different tests before the technology had been developed to create the fur, and it was a lot of prosthetics. That’s what I assumed I was walking into, and then they were like, “No. No makeup”.

Although Cats has received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, we cannot deny the importance of screen productions moving towards the use of faux fur over real fur.

With huge studios like Disney opting only for the animal friendly alternative faux fur, we hope that other film and TV production companies will soon follow suit!
